Worplesdon Phoenix 2 Oxshott Royals Rebels 7
Oxshott stay ahead of the pack at the top of the table after they found their form in a second half that ended up an ill-tempered affair.
Both sides lacked bite in the first half and it took 26 minutes before the deadlock was broken when, with an advancing Neuner challenging the keeper, Nicholls looped the ball into the net.
Minutes later, a perfectly weighted ball from Smith on the left was smashed past the keeper by Brett to put Royals two up.
Pressing for the third that would surely have ended the game as a contest, however, Oxshott let Worplesdon back in the game and two quick goals brought the score level.
Dunsire and Mughal came on as substitutes and the two instantly combined to put Royals back in the lead. Mughal’s through ball, following a speedy run down the wing, was met by Dunsire, who slotted the ball home to give Royals a 3-2 half-time advantage.
Oxshott looked much more like their plucky selves in the second half and five minutes in increased their lead when, following a goalmouth scramble, Smith pushed home a Tough corner. Twelve minutes later, Bishop met a perfectly flighted cross from Bryant to put Royals 5-2 ahead.
Royals stretched their lead to four goals in the 66th minute when a powerful Tough free kick from the edge of the area bent round the left-hand side of the wall and smashed into the top corner of the net. Six minutes later, Nicholls was hacked down on the edge of the area, and Tough stepped up to send a second free kick round the wall, this time dispatching it in the bottom corner to wrap up the score at 7-2.
In the final five minutes, the game became increasingly fractious, with firstly yellow cards being shown to players from both teams and then a Worplesdon player receiving his marching orders.
The defence – Farrow, Bishop, Crane, Hawkins – deserve a special mention for keeping Worplesdon’s attacks at bay, while keeper Frazer made a one-handed wonder save in the first half at a crucial time for Royals.
Man of the match was left winger Smith, who crafted some excellent opportunities.
