Our U9A team (U10′s for this coming season) reached the final of the Arsenal International Soccer Festival played last weekend at Royal Holloway University in Egham, Surrey.

Teams from around the world were competing in the older age groups but our opponents were all from different parts of England. Our team was unbeaten during their 8 matches, apart from the all important penalty shoot out in the final. This meant we continued our practice of losing in the final of the tournaments we play in (5 in a row now!)

It was no disgrace though, as the team we lost to was Burnham Wood who have only lost 2 matches in 3 years. The pick of our performances was a 2-1 victory over Bristol Rovers in the semi-final.

The icing on the cake was to win the tournament fair play award – well done, boys!

One of Oxshott Royals main sponsors is Savills of Cobham. As well as presenting The Savills Shield for those who have made an outstanding contribution to the club, Savills has pledged £1,000 to the Royals for every house that is sold through their branch that was owned by a Royals parent.

True to their word, the first of what we hope will be many cheques was handed to Chairman Mike Smith by Ian Camplin of Savills on Presentation Day. Parents of boys who play for their club and are thinking of selling their home should remember that if they do so through Savills, the Club really benefits!

The Savills Shield

Ian Camplin of Savills Estate agents, Cobham presents the Savills Shield to Willemien Schurer

The Savills Shield for the 2009-10 season went to Willemien Schurer, for her outstanding contribution to the Oxshott Royals.

Her achievements are best summed up by Under 8’s Manager, Gerry Coulter:

“As you may be aware this season I ran two teams at U8 on a Saturday with a total of 21 boys. I had no second coach so the logistics of running two matches each week were “interesting” let alone the challenge of picking the boys and rotation to ensure we turned up for each game with a team!

Willemien volunteered for the role of Team Manager and became the person who made it all work. She made it all happen smoothly and efficiently! Although I would pick the team, manage training sessions and stand on the side-line coaching, she effectively took charge of everything else!

This included:

Managing all pre-season preparation

Signing players

Taking kit orders

Managing kit collection and distribution

Arranging pre-season training / friendlies

Arranging two fixtures each week

Liaising with Graham to ensure we have pitches and

Liaising with all parents to ensure availability for games weekly

Managing a rotation system to ensure we turned up with 9 players per game. Thus leaving three players at home each week.

Managing a waiting list of players which is why we will go to 4 teams next year!!!

Attending club meetings

So much was covered and organised by Willemien she more than deserves recognition by way of this prestigious award.”

Oxshott Royals Rebels 2 Claygate Royals Swans 2

Royals left it very late in their final match of the season when they came from 2-0 down with eight minutes remaining to snatch a 2-2 draw.

Two early goals 60 seconds apart had left Oxshott chasing a 2-0 deficit from the 12th minute, but, despite numerous Royals attacks and a handful of shots on goal, the visitors went in at the interval two goals to the good.

Royals continued to attack throughout the second half, but it wasn’t until they switched to a more attacking formation that they pulled one back, El Fadel heading a McLoughlin free kick past the keeper.

Three minutes later El Fadel turned provider, tearing down the left wing before crossing for Nicholls to head in the equaliser.

Oxshott pushed for the winner for the final five minutes but couldn’t get the vital third goal that would have brought them victory.

Oxshott Royals Rebels 4 Windlesham Village 2

Royals’ best performance of the season saw them beat top-of-the-table Windlesham, who would have been crowned league champions had they managed a victory.

Oxshott came out of the stalls at full pelt and Bryant put them ahead after just three minutes when he steered the ball into the net after a goalmouth scramble.

Windlesham equalised, however, just seven minutes later and stunned Royals by taking the lead in the 13th minute.

Oxshott, who never looked like rolling over and accepting defeat, bounced back to level midway through the half, with Bryant again putting the ball past the visitors’ keeper following a scramble in the goalmouth.

Three minutes later Royals took the lead, when El Fadel latched on to a tremendous through ball from Smith and sent a shot goal-bound, before it ricocheted off a Windlesham player and into the net, giving Oxshott a 3-2 lead at half time.

McLoughlin doubled Royals’ advantage 15 minutes into the second period, when he fired a low free kick into the left-hand corner of the net and, despite Windlesham throwing everything they could at Oxshott, from that point the home side never looked like losing their lead.

It was a vintage Oxshott victory, with every player giving 110% and battling for every ball, and should seal Royals a fourth-place finish.

3-0 down after just half an hour, Oxshott fought back to almost snatch a draw in what ended up a nine-goal thriller. Royals were lacklustre in the first half but after losing three goals they pulled one back nine minutes from the interval through Nicholls. Woking scored a fourth just minutes into the second period but Nicholls again reduced the deficit to two with his second in the 50th minute. A fifth goal for Woking looked to have ended the game as a contest but Oxshott moved up a gear and began to pile on the pressure. Nicholls bagged his hat trick to pull back within two goals of United, then five minutes from the end Brett scored a fourth to set up a thrilling final period. Despite constant pressure, however, Royals couldn’t find the equaliser and suffered their fourth league defeat of the season.
